Workplace democracy for healthy people, places and planet

Workplace meeting

Lifelong wellbeing theme

What’s on offer?

A lively and entertaining talk from John Barry for 30 minutes followed by 30 minute responses from 3-4 invited speakers from the trades union movement, business, government and civil society, then 45 minutes - 1 hour audience discussion.

What’s it about?

We live in democracies yet for those of us with jobs, we work in non-democratic workplaces... why should democracy end at the office door? or factory gate? or lecture theatre door for that matter? This public discussion will examine, and show the evidence base and arguments for, the multiple benefits of extending democratic decision-making to the workplace, ranging from increasing well being and worker productivity (thus opening up the real possibility of reducing the working week), empowering workers to develop new socially useful rather than socially useless or destructive innovations and products, and contribute towards overcoming the ecocidal drive for growth at all costs, which is a direct consequence of shareholder profit based firms.

Who’s leading the event?

Prof John Barry, Centre for Sustainability, Equality and Climate Action, School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics
