What’s on offer?

The 2023 Showcase from the MA in Arts Management combines highlights of the exciting new student research in arts and cultural industries management and cultural policy with insights and reflections by visiting contemporary researchers. This year’s event will be delivered in-person at Queen’s University Belfast and will feature highlights of student work, a 30 minute talk by academic Dr Christina Ballico on the music city as a form of urban cultural policy, followed by a 45-minute Q&A with the speakers led by a key figure in Belfast's policy sphere.

What’s it about?

This event will feature the work of Dr Christina Ballico. Dr Ballico’s work focuses on music and popular culture and how a city might be reimagined as a location for creative events. Her talk will draw upon her 2020 (co-authored with Dr Allan Watson) book on the concept of the ‘music city’ as a form of urban cultural policy, will explore the advantages and challenges of adopting music city policies in a range of cities in different geographical contexts and illustrate how local geographical, social and economic contexts and particularities shape the nature of music city policies in particular cities. The Q&A session will help draw connections between this research and how the music industry operates in Belfast. As Belfast was awarded the prestigious UNESCO City of Music title in 2021, this event is timely and of interest to those beyond the academic world.

A live Q&A will accompany the session. The showcase is popular each year with anyone interested in or working in the arts and cultural sector and a great way for the public to hear about the research and thinking behind the exhibitions, events and performances we all enjoy.

Who’s leading the event?
