This interactive and scenario-based workshop will provide practical solutions to enrich the interpersonal skills of practitioners involved in community sport and physical activity (e.g., coaches). Specifically, cutting-edge research will be drawn upon to support you in a) managing your own and others’ emotions, b) building and maintaining trusting relationships, and c) positively influencing the values, beliefs, and actions of others.
Community sport coaches play a pivotal role in transforming lives and communities for the better. Despite their important social responsibility, traditional coach education programmes tend not to address the development and deployment of interpersonal skills. This situation often leaves coaches feeling underprepared and ill equipped to build those positive relations that are crucial to activate change in the health and wellbeing of participants and communities.
In response, our programme of research activity is seeking to help community sport coaches develop those personal, relational, emotional, and socio-political skills that are essential for improving lives and shaping society.
The event will be led by Dr Ben Ives (Manchester Metropolitan University), Dr Adam Nichol (Northumbria University), Dr Laura Gale (University of Hull), and Ms Thalia Holdom (Manchester Metropolitan University). Collectively, these presenters have extensive experience of researching policy and practice issues related to (community) sport coaching.
They strive to work closely with industry to support and resource community sport coaches so they are best equipped to provide high-quality sport and recreation provision that transforms lives. Ben, Adam, Laura, and Thalia also have significant experience of infusing and translating this research into active practice as community sport coaches themselves.
This is an open event for people aged 18-years and above.
This event will be of particular interest to practitioners involved in the delivery, administration, and management of sport and physical activity in community settings.
