An interactive workshop for school-age children, about the importance of healthy and sustainable diets. The session will include an interactive quiz, activities, food tasting and demonstrations that explore what makes a healthy and sustainable diet. Participants will also learn how to recognise problems with our current food environment and will be encouraged to think of solutions to overcome these. Families attending the workshop will be able to try out a virtual reality headset to experience ‘a vertical farm,’ and explore novel ways of food production. The workshop will also include some demonstrations from healthcare professionals on the importance and benefits of healthy diets on our teeth and the human body. The event is being brought together by researchers from FixOurFood, a 5-year research programme led by the University of York which seeks to transform food systems across Yorkshire.
5 Travel bursaries, £20 each, are being offered to those who would like to attend but may find it difficult to do so. Please indicate if this will be needed at the time of booking. Participants should contact sundus.mahdi@york.ac.uk first if they would like to apply to a travel bursary, before booking their spot at the event.
At FixOurFood, our vision is for affordable, healthy, sustainable and tasty food for all; good for the health of our children and our planet. We are moving towards approaches which provide the greatest benefit to those needing it most. This interactive workshop will help children navigate through our food system. Through fun and learning, we will discuss what a healthy and sustainable diet is, why it is important, and how we can make the environment around us healthier and more sustainable. Children and families will leave this workshop with a better understanding of how they can contribute to a healthier and more sustainable food system and how to improve their own diets and overall health.
