DIY self-care: building a ‘creative toolkit’ to support your wellbeing

art materials

Lifelong wellbeing theme

What’s on offer?

Expand your 'creative toolkit' with this series of interactive workshops that will help you add new creative techniques to your 'DIY self-care' repertoire. Each activity has been selected because it is fun, accessible (you won't need to buy lots of new kit if you want to keep doing it!), and simple to learn. Best of all, research shows that engaging with creative methods like these can support wellbeing -- so hopefully you will leave the workshops feeling more relaxed, and with new skills that you can implement the next time you're feeling blue or just want to take a time-out.

What’s it about?

The methods will be introduced over the course of several workshops, and you are welcome to attend any or all of the sessions, as suits your tastes. We will explore:
--Creative writing, including poetry
--Drawing, including neurographic drawing, sketchnoting, and zen tangles
--Collage and mixed media
--Performance, including improvisation

Who’s leading the event?

The sessions will be facilitated by Dr Caitlin Kight, Lecturer in Education Studies at the University of Exeter, and lead of the Creative Toolkits research project (funded by the Education Incubator and the Societies and Cultures Institute). In addition to being an experienced educator, Caitlin is also an award-winning and internationally published creator who is passionate about wellbeing.

Open to

Events are open to and suitable for participants aged 16 and up. The workshops have been developed in collaboration with students, educators, and medical professionals, all of whom reported that the creative methods would be appropriate not only for leisure time, but also in the context of school and work -- so we can accommodate many interests and motivations! No prior knowledge of any of these approaches is needed, and all supplies will be provided (along with light refreshments).
