Diasporas and Data

Lifelong wellbeing theme

What’s on offer?

An interactive talk exploring some key questions about migration and diasporas with participants, drawing on the SOAS research project ‘Connecting during Covid’.

What’s it about?

The activity explores questions such as: What do we mean by a diaspora? What do we know about diaspora communities in the UK? What do these communities bring to the UK? And to their countries of origin? For each question, we explore common assumptions and available data. As well as evidence from recent qualitative research, students consider and discuss graphs, maps and online data sources.

Who’s leading the event?

Dr Anna Lindly's research focuses on global migration dynamics, politics and experiences. She has particular experience working on displacement and refugee issues, transnationalism and remittances, and Somali mobilities. Recent/on-going research focuses on immigration politics, policy and practice in the UK, particularly around asylum and detention.
