Collaging Inclusion

Lifelong wellbeing theme

What’s on offer?

We invite you to a participatory workshop, in-person with refreshments provided. This is a 2 hour art workshop, where the participants will first watch a video about collage, engage in discussion about collage and photo-montage art, and hear a summary of research about inclusive practice using arts-based methods. Each participant will then make a collage/photo-montage using magazine images and materials that express, through metaphors, how they feel about difference, diversity and inclusion. Once created, the individual collage pieces will be juxtaposed together to make one large piece of art-work to be later hung in Northumbria University that showcases our beliefs and values on inclusion. This will be visible to partners of the university, parents and students visiting on open days, teachers and current students in ITE.

What’s it about?

Dr Lucy Barker is an academic at Northumbria University and has completed a thesis that explored understandings of inclusive pedagogy in the classroom, with a focus on diversity, and how we can all learn in one space-place.

Questions we will be asking when making the collage through metaphors:

How do we like to learn?

How do you like to be included?

How does it feel to be included?

How can we include everyone?

What is important for young people in the classroom space?

Who’s leading the event?
